...Lying directly west of the capital, in almost a straight line, are the towns of Tsiroanomandidy, Ankavandra, Tsiandro and Antsalova. My maps gave few clues as to what lay between them and my guidebooks were absolutely blank for the entire region from the Central Highlands to the west coast - an area of roughly the same size as El Salvador. This was what the Reverend William Clayton Pickersgill had called in 1875 ‘the land of the fighting Sakalava’, and as the bush-taxi staggered beyond the five-hour mark I could fully appreciate how the island’s most fearless tribe had come to be named ‘People of the Long Valleys’. 
In the spirit of great Victorian explorers, Reverend Pickersgill ventured forth: ‘to find entrance for light among the darkened Sakalava.
